Unicorn Gundam

時は2025年の初めまで遡ります。YouTubeで「スポンジ塗装」という技法を見かけ、どうしても試してみたくなった私は、近所の模型店へ行き、練習用に安価なSDガンダムのキット――「SDユニコーンガンダム」――を手に取りました。

I want to take you back to the start of 2025, I have just seen a painting method on youtube, sponge painting. I’ve got to try this. So I went to my local crafting shop and picked up a cheap SD kit to try it on. The SD Unicorn Gundam.

当時、ユニコーンガンダムは新しい塗装技法を試すための実験台となりました。様々な色や塗料が入り混じり、見た目は無茶苦茶でしたが、その役割は十分に果たしてくれました。やがてそれは「グスタフ・カール」に取って代わられることになります。グスタフ・カールこそが私の新たな最高傑作であり、新時代の幕開けを告げる存在となったのです。

Back then, the Unicorn Gundam became a trial and error test piece for the new painting technique. It was all sorts of different colours and paint types. It was a mess, but it served its purpose. Only to be cast aside for Gustav Karl, which became my new crowning achievement and the start of a new era.

時は流れて9月。現在取り組んでいる「ライトニングガンダム」の塗装に本格的に着手する前に、まずは塗装の技術を磨いておこうと考えています。また、Discordグループの友人たちとの間で企画された「テーマ別チャレンジ」に向けた作品も作りたいと思っていました。そこでうってつけなのが、手元にあった古い「ユニコーンガンダム」です。

塗装の作業は本当に楽しかったですし、仕上がりにも大満足しています。何より、このキットを無事に再生できたことが一番嬉しいですね。とはいえ、次に控えているライトニングガンダムを塗るまでには、まだ検討すべきことがたくさんあります。あれは完璧な仕上がりにしたいですから。

Fast forward to September, I’m trying to refine my techniques before I commit to painting my current project, the Lightning Gundam. I’m also trying to create something for a themed challenge amongst friends in a Discord group. I have something perfect for the job, the old Unicorn Gundam.

I had so much fun painting this. I’m super happy with the results and even more happy that I was able to save the kit. However, I still have lots to think about before painting my upcoming Lightning Gundam. I want that to be perfect.
